Is emissions testing required every year?
Yes, a 1986-2007 model year gasoline-powered car or light-duty truck (up to 8,500 lbs. GVWR) requires a passing emissions test every year. Click here for a list of exemptions.

If I moved to Georgia earlier in the year and had my vehicle tested, is a new test required to renew my license plate?
No, the test is good for one renewal. If the emissions test was performed within the last 12 months a new test will not be required.

I bought a used vehicle, do I need a new emissions test?
If the seller did not give you a copy of the passing emissions test, you can check the serial number, or call our office with the serial number and we will verify your emissions information.

Is there a grace period after my birthday?
No, you are mailed the renewal notice approximately 60 days before your birthday and your renewal is DUE by midnight of your birthday.

What if my vehicle does not pass emissions?
We recommend having your vehicle inspected four to six weeks prior to your registration renewal date to allow for any needed repairs. If it is your renewal date and your vehicle has failed the emissions test, a repair waiver may be issued if you meet all of the specified qualifications. Go to www.cleanairforce.com for information concerning repair waivers. You may pay the ad valorem tax before your renewal date to avoid late penalties.

I am not driving my vehicle; do I need to renew my tag?
The law provides that the taxes due on the vehicle be paid on or before your birthday. There is a county ordinance that requires a current license plate be displayed on a vehicle that is located on your property.
