State of Georgia - INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS
Your insurance company is required by State of Georgia law to transmit verification of your insurance to the Georgia Department of Motor Vehicle Safety. If the vehicle ID number does not match what is in the State computer, you will not be able to renew your tag. Please check the ID number on your car or registration to that on your insurance card. If it does not match, contact your insurance agent immediately to have it changed.
No one will be able to renew tags if their insurance is not current in the state computer, except on newly purchased vehicles whereby a binder (good for 30 days) or a declaration page on your policy (good for 30 days)will be accepted.
Insurance cards are no longer acceptable.
This is State of Georgia law.
NEWCOMERS TO THE STATE MUST TRANSFER THEIR INSURANCE TO A GEORGIA POLICY BEFORE REGISTERING THEIR VEHICLE.
If you are DROPPING INSURANCE on wrecked or non-operating vehicles, you must FIRST CANCEL YOUR TAG at the Tag Office. This will prevent you receiving a letter and/or fine from the State Department of Revenue under the new insurance laws.
